Boston Bay Windows Interview

Darren says New York has been a huge influence [in the writing of his album], noting he “just came over and stayed. I just fell in love with the place.” But the city’s influence isn’t quite as evident on Darren’s album, which seems directly influenced by that great British techno-pop music, only his lyrics are much more insightful and personal. “The production schedule was about a year for [Anything is Possible],” he says, noting that’s about eight months longer than normal. I wasn’t surprised when he called himself a perfectionist. That attention to detail is evident when you hear the album, with every track — no, every chord — purposefully placed. “I’m one of those people that just keeps tweaking things. I should listen to Madonna. Her advice is always to know when a song is done and just leave it alone. It’s like finding that end point,” he says. But Anything is Possible is far from over-produced. Tracks like “Out of the Rain” and “Drowning” highlight Darren’s Savage Garden-like voice. They aren’t muddled by background noise, like so many other techno albums.

That’s due mostly to Darren’s incredibly personal lyrics, which he admits pull directly from his life. “I can’t go into all those personal details,” he says about the track “You and I.” ” It was one of those songs that I wrote that I wasn’t quite sure it was going to make it to the album, and interestingly enough, it’s the one that a lot of people are picking up on.” “You and I” is a peppy-bubble love song, with lyrics “every day now I fall head over heels for you/I really can’t help myself cause I was meant for you.”

“The message I wanted to get across with the album . . . is that you can make a difference and it doesn’t really matter what situation you are in, there are always better things,” Darren says. “It’s up to you to make the difference.” He also wants to move the listener, saying, “I so wanted to write a song that could make someone feel.” He should rest comfortably knowing that he has.
